Course management (adapting strategy to the particular course) can be critical to winning golf tournaments -- it can save as much as two to three strokes a round. Even the pros make mistakes in how they play a course; there are plenty of stories of missed opportunities and poor decisions that have led to lost tournaments.
If professionals make course management mistakes in the heat of the battle, we can expect that junior golfers are subject to the same kinds of mistakes when the pressure builds.
Like other aspects of the game, course management needs to be taught on a consistent basis by working with students on the course and observing their play during competitive tourn'Courseaments. It’s impossible to teach course management on the range.
At the Total Concept Golf Academy, our students receive regular playing lessons to make sure they understand the process for making good decisions. This includes:
- Developing an understanding of scoring strategy
- Learning to quickly evaluate all available options
- Incorporating the decision-making process into a "pre-shot routine"
In golf, every stroke matters and good course management leads to lower scores. |
